Another post for I2P beginners:
There's basically about five ways to set up your browser. There are speed and anonymity tradeoffs for each. I make no recommendation here on which is best, decide for yourself...
1) Proxy everything through I2P. This is the safest, assuming you don't mind that the outproxy operator can snoop your traffic. It is also much much slower for regular internet traffic, of course. For complete protection, you also have to block HTTPS traffic. People often forget this.
2) Run Tor, and route *.i2p traffic to I2P and everything else to Tor. This requires Privoxy, or SwitchProxy, or FoxyProxy, or some other intelligent proxy switcher. This is safer than 1), because you can route HTTPS traffic to Tor.
3) Proxy only *.i2p traffic through I2P. This has anonymity issues, as a malicious eepsite could contain references to standard internet addresses. But it is much faster, and a lot of people use I2P this way. This option is not for the super-paranoid (or maybe even the modestly paranoid - see below). However, the dangers can be mitigated by:
- Not using any eepsite where you log in or register (as you are still anonymous then...)
- Using different tunnels for eepProxy than for IRC (i.e. non-shared)
- Running NoScript or other script blocker
- Blocking the sending of the Referer header in your browser
- Not telling people when you click on a *.i2p link in IRC
4) Use TorButton, which switches between routing everything through Privoxy, or routing nothing through Privoxy.
5) Run two different browsers or profiles, one for *.i2p only and one for regular internet only.
